A matter of life and sex
Published in Unknown Binding by Paper Drum ()

Captivating, Visceral, and ShockingI received this book as a birthday gift. I thought @ first it would be another overly dramafied story of a gay man's contraction of AIDS and his long painful death. This book doesn't celebrate his life. It's a graphic, dark novel on a young man's adventure through the an underworld that eventually infected him with HIV. It's honestly graphic, powerful, sexually charged and visceral. It takes your attention. I'm nearly finished and I would recomend this book.
A bracing honestyTheoretically, this is not the sort of "AIDS novel" I would care to read, following as it does a pattern that has become far too predictable: the chronicle of a gay man's sexual adventures followed by his (inevitable?) contraction of HIV. But this book grabbed me anyway: its clean, straightforward, sometimes graphic style -- espeically in a time when too many gay American novelists have succumbed to fussy literary affectation. It's odd and ironic to find a British author who writes more like an American noir novelist, while his American counterparts are too often trying to write (in the 1990s!) like Henry James.
This novel was truly a case of bracing candor and honesty overriding the downbeat subject matter. It deserves to be read as a model as well -- for other writers who want to say what they mean, instead of flit around the edges in some mistaken notion that such flitting is what constitues art.
I was saddened to read of Moore's death a few months ago, from AIDS complications -- and to realize that the novel was much more autobiographical than I wanted it to be. His voice was brave and pure. These loses cannot properly be measured. But I for one will miss the other books Moore might have written had he lived. James Robert Bake

Mediums: Speakers With the Dead
Published in Paperback by White Wolf Publishing Inc. (September, 1997)
Average review score:

Great sourcebook! Tremendously useful. This book is well-written and covers a vast scope. Contrary to what the title might lead you to believe, this book covers a lot more than just plain mediums. In fact, it offeres detailed information on just about any faction in the Skinlands that might interact with the Restless Dead: "Boardwalk mediums" found at carnivals and circuses the ruthless Giovanni vampires, even charlatans and frauds who possess no real talent, but manage to offend wraiths with their very presumption and chicanery.
This book is definitely worth the purchase price- it will enrich virtually any Wraith chronicle.
Mediums done rightThis is a fine resource for mediums, much better than the Quick and the Dead. The systems stuff is vastly improved, with a battery of new merits and flaws for mediums that I actually found useful (and can be used to supplement or replace the hedge magic paths for interacting with wraiths). There is some good stuff on summoning, a large section on Native American medicine men and shamanic dealings with the dead, a fresh look at many of the old ghost-dealing groups, and a new ability for those people who have had enough with wraiths shouting in their ears.

Miami Then & Now
Published in Paperback by Centennial Press (January, 1992)
Average review score:

MemoriesI was born and reared in Miami, the fourth generation of my Pioneer South Florida family. I was delighted with this book, it brought back so many memories.
The old photographs are gems, and the descriptions well written and informative. I enjoyed the "then" pictures with the "now", in some instances they are almost unbelievable, the Coconut Grove Womens Club little Club House which I went to frequently is a good example, long may it survive!
Exquisite PhotographsParks and Klepser do a wonderful job documenting the evolution and transformation of Miami and Miami Beach. A great book for illustrating Miami and Miami Beach's past history (for those people who believe there is little) and a wonderful guide to our present tropical metropolis.

Minor Wife
Published in Paperback by Heaven Lake Press (30 January, 2002)
Average review score:

A Decade Of Detective DelightMy full apologies to Chris Moore for not doing this review sooner because Minor Wife proves that after ten years of outstanding work in Thailand,Cambodia and Vietnam, both Vinnie Calvino and his creator,Chris Moore, still have the powerful ability to get your attention and make you voluntarily go through thie story.Minor Wife is a very appropriate title in that much of Thai society is a contrast between major wives and mia nois, the lesser wife of a man. This novel takes one through these two worlds that can often intermesh in manners that are not pleasant whatsoever.Moore finds himself involved in this area and deals with it as he has before in his previous adventures in the darkest--and most interesting--hearts of Southeast Asia.It was also sanuk to see his expat friend from Cold Hit,McPhail, return with his own sarcastic outlook of expat life in Bangkok for people such as himself,Calvino and Quinn the upper-class level of expatriate. The chicken fight that McPhail arranges for a chicken named Calvino vs a chicken named Hitler is well worth the price of the book alone and likwise, the chaos of Songkran on the streets of Bangkok is entertaining to those of us who have been in Thailand and are fully expected to act like small children as we soak the hell out of anyone walking before us!For myself, however,I can honestly say that the part of this novel that I find most intriguing and a firm reminder of how long I've been reading about Calvino's life in Bangkok is the scene where he is in the room of his long-term secretary,Ratana.Chris shows us so much of the hidden thoughts and insights of both characters without fully taking you into their feelings or even allowing either character to make a complete verbal statement to the other one and this piece alone is perhaps the best part for fans such as myself who have been here from the start. The last segment to this fantastic story that got my personal attention was the character Darryl,a golf instructor who was badly injured in a motorcycle accident and is currently having troubles with using and pronouncing the proper word in the average sentance.I can relate to this because I was involved in a motorcycle accident in Chiang Mai in '99 that split my head open and left me in a coma for three weeks. It took me a long time to remember even the smallest details and there are times now when I forget names of family and friends and this is a deep time of fear for me.Chris' rendering of Darryl is yet another striking example of a writer who knows how to make his characters realistic and gets you to keep coming back looking for more. Please read this book for the best possible insight into the expat world of Thailand!
A must readAfter being in Asia 20 plus years and reading a couple of Chris Moores books, his new one "Minor Wife" is a tale that moves quickly through to the murder plot but at the same time slows down to describe each of the main characters Detective Calvino comes in contact with the solve the case. Chris's accurate and detailed descriptions of people and places in Thailand makes you feel like you are sitting in the corner watching the drama unfold before you with the smell of mekong and coke so thick in the air you could cut it with a knife. Detective Calvino leads you thru the best and worst of Thailand from the seamy sides of life in brothels to the upscale country clubs of the rich and famous and untangles the knots that bind them together throughout the investigation that the officials have all but written off as an unsolveable and unworthy expenditure of assets to solve the case of a murdered prostitute nick named 8K, which is also her price for a round of bedroom olympics. A must read, I couldn't lay the book down until Calvino had led me all the way through the labyrinth of pimps, yings, golfers, and real estate tycoons. Too bad that Calvino is only a fictional character because you'll want to book a flight to Bangkok and have a drink with him after you finish the book.

Miracleman: Book Two
Published in Hardcover by Eclipse Books (May, 1991)
Average review score:

The Triumph of the SupermenMiracleman, who is this you might ask. Well, he was Marvelamn, until Marvel Comics sued and put the fear of the copyright into a bunch of innocent British comic artists and publishers. So they figured, keep everything but the name, and then suddenly, no lawsuit. Then suddenly we had one of the greatest Comic Book series ever. Full of scintilating action, an emotional depth uncommon in comics, and absolutely amazing art. But there is a caveat, it is that these are not comics for kids. There is an incredible amount of violence in several of the issues, and the images presented are disturbing enough to even impact adult sensabilities. There is a certain simple quality to the books that belies the depth of the storytelling. We don't meet super villain after super villain. Instead we meet human and superhuman both trying to co-exist in the same world. In fact, it is the human side of the tales that provides some of the most riveting moments in the comics. If you are an avid reader of the comic book , then this is one series you must know in order to understand so many of the trends that are finally sweeping the industry today. The question of Superhero or God? The tension of man and superman living alongside one another. And the deconstruction of the archetypical superhero myth. All elements of today's most succesful comic book endeavors. This is one series, whether you find them in the original comics, or the TPB reprints, or hold on, the early summer arrival of all new reissues of the first series, that you must read. Alan Moore is irrefutably the finest writer in the business today. Read these books and you will find out why.
All Miracleman books are excellent reads and investments.these books are very hard to get.
They are comics by the master of comics, Alan Moore.
Get them, read them, save them.
They are about a new look at the entire superhero genre,
don't let the plot through you, stick with it, it turns
and twists like no other superhero.

Moments of My Life
Published in Hardcover by Loft Press (01 December, 1999)
Average review score:

Moments of My LifeThe author shared so many of her most private thoughts that I felt I was eavesdropping on her intimate conversations. As I continued to read her poetry I felt I had the invitation to learn more and more about her. She has the amazing ability to communicate so honestly that I now feel we are great friends. What a gifted writer! What a wonderful person!
Inspiring!I thoroughly enjoyed this inspiring book of poetry by Jacqueline Moore. Her poems touch on a tremendous variety of themes, including love, marriage, parenthood, and spirituality. Perhaps her most startling and impressive poems are the ones that describe her struggle with Parkinson's Disease--the effects it has had on her life and family, and her determination to take advantage of the abilities she still has, instead of focusing on the ones she has lost. I highly recommend this collection of poems, and I look forward to reading further works by this poet.

Murder Incorporated

nothing pretty about this world...Dark and rich and delicious... makes you feel you are interacting with the characters. Stuck on the edge of life with Keith Gallaher... talking as if he knows you, or maybe you know him... everything is entwined.. if he falls, you fall. A fabulous read that keeps you walking the streets late at night with him right to the last page.
You gotta move... and buy this one today!!!What an excellent story... an ad guy in turmoil!
I usually read a chapter a night... with most books, with Murder Inc. couldn't put it down - with the end of each chapter I had to push on. I finished it in two marathon sittings. There are some deliciously funny parts that accent this great story. You would swear that you knew the characters in this book, the author somehow makes it all very familiar to the reader. Some of the modern musical referrences that the characters discuss in the story are very obscure, which makes the dialogue that much more enjoyable, and less flavour of the month. Looking forward to seeing more from Moore.
